Ever wanted to go to New Zealand? Now’s your chance and the New Zealand Tourism Board is footing the bill.

The New Zealand Tourism Board also known as Tourism New Zealand is sponsoring a contest through June 6, 2012 called Stories Beat Stuff.

Entrants have an opportunity to win one of 2, 18 day trips to New Zealand for 4 people simply be declaring on video what they would trade in exchange for the prize valued at $30,000.

Prize options are:
1) Winter Highlife Experience –

Can you say ski New Zealand? The winner and his/her 4 guests will enjoy roundtrip airfare on Air New Zealand, accommodations, rental car, skiing (complete with gear and lessons, if needed), bungy jumping, jet boating, skydiving, four wheel drive tours and more. Plus they will get VIP tickets to the Queenstown Winter Festival.

2) Natural Goodness –

Hit the road, a camper’s delight. The winner and his/her 4 guests will enjoy roundtrip airfare on Air New Zealand, accommodations in a b-berth campervan, exploring, kayaking and mountain biking the National Parks (with a guide if needed), paragliding, rafting, caving and glacier climbing, overnight cruise and star gazing.

So, are you going to enter? I sure am.  The philosophy behind this contest fits me to a tee – I would much rather have experiences than things.  And the timing couldn’t be more perfect.  Just last month my husband was telling me he really wanted to go to New Zealand.  Now, to just figure out what would be trade worthy.

Thanks to Alouise at Travelerahoy for the heads up!

Note: instead of receiving Hyatt points for each stay you will be receiving airline miles of your chosen airline.

My first inclination would be to earn miles with American, but after not being able to take advantage of the $320 First class from Asia trip (read yesterday’s post), I need to build up my United mileage bank.

Which airline are you choosing?

Diversity

May 3, 2012

Long bitten by the travel bug I’ve been collecting miles since the ’80’s; collecting points have come late in the game, only this year, but yesterday was a great reminder that diversity is important.

There was a great fare from an exotic Asian destination to the US from $160 per person in Business Class.  I spent the good part of my day finding the right travel dates to get the lowest fare possible (I did my work early in the morning to free up the midmorning and afternoon, least you think I wasn’t being responsible).  Having managed to find seats but for $327, the price was still a great travel deal.  The only catch, I had to get there first.

Because 99% of my miles are with One World (LOVE American Airlines) and this destination is served by the Star Alliance I was reminded that I have all my eggs in one basket.  I lost out on an amazing trip at an unbelievable price because I hadn’t planned ahead. For a person who is completely Type A this was a slap in the face.  Can you guess where my focus of earning miles and points are going to be for the next few months?
